What are cookies?
Cookies are files that can be downloaded onto your device through websites. They are tools with an essential role in the provision of a number of information society services. Among other purposes, they enable a website to store and recover information about the browsing habits of a user or their device and, depending on the information obtained, they may be used to recognize the user and enhance the service offered.
Types of cookies
There are two types depending on the entity that manages the domain from where cookies are sent and processes the data obtained:
Proprietary cookies: these cookies are sent to the user’s terminal from a device or domain managed by the publisher itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
Third-party cookies: these cookies are sent to the user’s terminal from a device or domain that is not managed by the publisher but rather by another entity, which processes the data obtained via the cookies.
If the cookies are installed from a device or domain managed by the publisher yet the information collected is managed by a third party, they may not be considered proprietary cookies.
There is also a second classification based on the time they remain in the client browser. They may be:
Session cookies: designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a webpage. They are normally used to store information only of interest during the provision of the service requested by the user one time (i.e. a list of products purchased).
Persistent cookies: the data continues to be stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a defined period of time by the party responsible for the cookie – from a few minutes to several years.
Finally, there is another classification with five types of cookies depending on how the data obtained are processed:
Technical cookies: those that allow users to browse a webpage, platform or application and use the different options or services that exist such as, for example, controlling traffic and data communication, session identification, accessing restricted parts, remembering elements of an order, completing the purchase process for an order, requesting registration or participation in an event, using security elements during browsing, storing content to broadcast videos or sound or sharing content via social media.
Customization cookies: they allow the user access to the services with some general predefined characteristics based on a series of criteria on the user’s terminal such as the language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional configuration for the area where the service is accessed, etc.
Analysis cookies: they allow the controller to monitor and analyse the behaviour of the users of the website to which they are linked. The information gathered using this type of cookie is used to measure the activity at the websites or on the application or platform and to prepare browsing profiles for the users of those sites, applications and platforms in order to add service improvements based on the analysis of the data on the use made by the service users.
Advertising cookies: they enable the most effective management possible of advertising space.
Behavioural advertising cookies: they store information on the users’ behaviour as obtained by continuous observation of their browsing habits in order to develop a specific profile to display advertising based on the foregoing.
